Privacy Policy — Tape

Last updated: 7 August 2026

Tape is an iOS camera app that records video through vintage camcorder filters. It has no account, no login, and no server run by us — the app works on your device. The developer and data controller is Tape, based in New Zealand. Questions: info+tape@roobieapp.com.

The short version

What stays on your device

Your footage is filtered on-device and written to the app's own storage; ejecting a tape saves it to your Photos library. There is no upload, cloud, or backup — we never see it. Your settings, tape library and tape names also stay on the device.

Tape asks for camera and microphone to record, and Photos (add-only) to save a finished tape — it cannot read your library.

What we collect, and why

Firebase Crashlytics (Google) — crash and error reports: stack traces, device model, OS and app version, timestamps, and a device-scoped install identifier (not an advertising ID). Firebase Analytics is included but switched off and collects nothing.

Mixpanel — product analytics, to see which features get used. The app sends only these events:

EventProperties
App Opened
Onboarding Finishedwhether camera access was granted
Tape Createdfilter era
Recording Startedfilter era
Recording Stoppedfilter era, length in seconds
Tape Ejectedfilter era, length in seconds
Eject Failederror type
Paywall Shownwhere it was opened from
Locked Era Tappedfilter era
Purchase Completed / Failed / Pendingerror type on failure
Restore Finishedwhether a purchase was found
Rating Prompt Shown

Standard device info travels with these events (OS, device model, app version), plus your IP address, from which Mixpanel derives an approximate city/region — no precise location. Events are tied to a random identifier created on first launch and stored on your device, never a name, email, or advertising ID.

Never collected: video, audio, stills, tape names, contacts, photos, precise location, email, or anything you type.

Purchases go through Apple; we receive only whether the purchase exists, never card details or your Apple identity.

Where the data goes

Crashlytics is run by Google LLC and Mixpanel by Mixpanel, Inc. — both US companies, so data may be processed outside your country, under their own privacy policies (Firebase, Mixpanel). It is kept no longer than needed for these purposes, subject to each vendor's retention settings.

Your rights

You may have the right to access, correct, delete, or object to the processing of your data — email info+tape@roobieapp.com. Because there is no account, the simplest way to remove the on-device identifier is to delete the app.

Children

Tape is rated 4+ and suitable for all ages, but is not directed at children and is not in Apple's Kids Category. It collects no name, email, or other personal detail, only the anonymous data above.

Changes

We may update this policy and will change the “Last updated” date above. Changes are not announced any other way, so please check this page for the current version.
